BodyMind: Undivided

This grand list of tips, tricks, and activities originated as a Google Document shared with everyone involved in the making of Attention: People With Body Parts. This continues to act as an inspirational space for folks deciding which body part to write to and those who struggle to recognize the alignment between the body/mind.

*Please note that not every suggestion on this list is a safe or viable option for every body*

  • Have someone trace out outline of your body with sidewalk chalk or marker
  • Stretch
  • Take close up photos of random parts of your body (a patch of skin on your leg, the inside of your ear, etc). Study them.
  • Go a day without speaking
  • Listen to Andrea Gibson
  • Watch Seven Pounds and/or Wit
  • Take a bath
  • Eat slowly
  • Sleep outside, preferably somewhere textured.
  • Make a list of safe spaces. Visit them if possible.
  • Sex--the good kind.
  • This(sorry a majority of them are female bodied)
  • Hold your breath
  • Listen to someone else's heartbeat or your own
  • Close your eyes more often
  • Sweat
  • Look at old pictures of yourself: how has your body changed?
  • Wear clothes you really like, and clothes you've never tried...wear someone else's clothes!
  • Dance
  • Hang out with animals; try to get on their level
  • Sing
  • Draw yourself inside-out
  • Lay flat on your stomach or back without moving.
  • Lay next to someone else without moving.
  • Get naked and put on some music that makes you feel like a superstar
  • Make faces at babies. Use your facial muscles!
  • Make faces at yourself - make faces at strangers!

  • Take off all your clothes ( a la Nelly) and do some naked yoga.
  • Donate blood and learn more about the impact of organ donors
  • invent a sport
  • Jump in a moon bounce and become weightless
  • Find your favorite place to play the body-drums (I am especially fond of the lower-belly-chest combo)
  • Master the art of shadow puppets, using your whole body and not just your hands.
  • Draw a face on different parts of your body--the face it would make if you were to have a conversation with it. Leave the markings there for at least one day.
  • Count the number of times you perform some mundane action over a span of time...number of throat clearings in a day, nail bites in a class, etc.
  • RadioLab: An hour dedicated to stories of the mind-body
  • Play connect-the-dots with your moles and freckles
  • Go vegan for a week
  • Play an instrument until your hands feel sore and blistered
  • Shovel dirt or do other manual labor for a few hours and feel how good it is to use your body!
  • Don't shower for a week or a month
  • Allow a part of your body to fall asleep and feel all the tingling sensations
  • Play in the dirt, or better yet, in the mud
  • Cry
  • Smile so much it hurts
  • Frown
  • Laugh til your abs are sore
  • Give yourself a scalp massage
  • Give yourself a jaw massage
